Handyman’s Guide to Troubleshooting and Repairing Lighting Fixtures

Light fixtures play a crucial role in both the overall aesthetics and functionality of any space. However, a light fixture that stops working can be very frustrating and may require professional assistance. There are many different things that can cause a light to stop working, including flickering lights, an overheating light, or a light that simply won’t turn on at all. If you are experiencing any of these issues with your light fixture, it is important to troubleshoot and repair the problem as soon as possible.

The first step in troubleshooting a lighting issue is to check the light bulb itself. If it appears to be burned out or is not seated properly in the socket, then this can fix the problem. Additionally, a loose metal socket tab can also interfere with the proper connection of the bulb to the socket and should be repositioned.

If the light bulb is good and the socket tab has been repositioned, the next thing to do is test for voltage. Using a multi-meter or voltage detector on the switch and the sockets will let you know whether or not electricity is getting to the light fixture. If power is not getting to the fixture, you will need to turn off the breaker for that circuit and start checking the wiring for problems.

A common reason that a light will begin to flicker or overheat is because of too high of a wattage for the fixture. Changing the wattage to one that is more appropriate can help resolve this issue. It is also possible that insulation around the light fixture has become compacted, and this can prevent airflow around the light fixture and cause it to overheat.

Another problem that can occur is that the light is plugged into a circuit that is overloaded. In this situation, the breaker for that circuit will trip to protect the equipment from overheating and potential fire hazards. If the breaker keeps tripping, it is likely that there is an electrical short between two wires and needs to be addressed by a licensed electrician.

Having the right tools and knowing what to do in the event of an electrical issue is vital for any handyman to have in their toolkit. Practicing safe work habits and following the steps to troubleshoot and repair a light fixture can save time, money and hassle for homeowners. If you are not comfortable performing these tasks yourself, contact a local handyman company in Memphis to get the job done safely.
